AtkinsExplore Similar Items: in Books Editorial Reviews Amazon.com ReviewsDesigned to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown, Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of most overeaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodies are so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydrates to fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating through the body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to store fat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to lose weight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrate consumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers to insulin as "the fat-producing hormone." Dr. Atkins's diet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulate insulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soon results in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is far from torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger is not a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins's patients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weight loss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes as lobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and even includes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus. --This text refers to the Paperback edition. From Publishers WeeklyTwenty years after publication of his bestselling Diet Revolution , Dr. Atkins is back and ready to raise a new ruckus. Once again, he contends that weight gain has little to do with fat intake; indeed, he will demonstrate "how much fat you can burn off, while eating liberally, even luxuriously."79 He encourages dieters to revel in traditional sources of protein like red meat, and to eat eggs and bacon for breakfast82-3 . Rapid weight loss, he promises, will be achieved through his 14-day "induction" diet, in which almost all carbohydrates are virtually banned from the table, forcing the body to go into a fat-burning metabolic state called ketosis. He still urges broad-based vitamin supplements to take up any nutritional slack. So what's changed in 20 years? Atkins says he now is more interested in "complete wellness" than in dropping pounds quickly; he stresses that the "induction" is not to be considered a lifetime regimen unless, of course, the dieter has particularly stubborn "metabolic resistance." Readers of his last book may notice some defensiveness--two decades of criticism clearly have taken their toll. Nonetheless, there is enough of the old Atkins to make this the most arrogant diet book to appear in a long while. sic, ital " I hope to amaze you ," he writes, " as I amazed millions of dieters in the past ." And that's when he's in his modest mode. 75,000 first printing; Literary Guild alternate. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc. When I started my diet in July of 1999, I was 270 lbs and 6' tall. I have lost 87 lbs and have passed my goal weight of 185. Have held below 185 for over two months. My menu is basically eggs, bacon and sausage for breakfast; a chicken (most often double chicken) salad for lunch; and steak, vegetables and salad for dinner. I snack on the Atkins bars and on Macadamia nuts. I have added a little fruit to the diet after hitting my goal. My cholesterol is 147. I am extremely strict. I have eaten no bread, pasta, sugar etc. for the entire period, and I have absolutely no desire to eat such food again. My only real deviation has been the continued consumption of caffeine in coffee and diet drinks and an occasional (every other month) glass of wine. For my body type, this diet worked great. During the past year, I have read the book several times, and it helps to reinforce what foods to eat. The key is just doing it every day.My Doctor, who had prescribed a no fat diet for me for the last 12 years, gave me a check up recently and told me that for middle aged men with large bellies, this diet seems to work the best. My problem is why didn't he tell me about this diet himself 12 years ago if that is what he truly thought. Luckily, I found the Atkins book on my own. Good luck.P.S. For those who hate this diet, I don't care if I lost 87 lbs of water; lugging that much water around was a real pain. Was this review helpful to you? Answer: Only Atkins!Atkins has been around now for over 30 years and for 1 reason it works.People are worried about the fat in the Atkins program but go around eating potato chips, frendh fries and ice cream? C'mon!I lost 48 lbs initially with Atkins a few years ago and have maintained it. While losing weight, I gained muscle, filled out my figure, lost in major fat areas; waist, hips and thighs. While on the program, I didn't feel like I was on a diet. I felt like I was having a feast each and every day.My skin tone also improved.Energy soared. I went from a couch potato to starting a mild exercise program of walking now I'm pumping iron too and doing more advanced exercises, cardio and spot training.I know people will say it's the exercise. And that would be only partly true. I lost 48 lbs without any exercise at all, just Atkins. The exercise part came because I wanted to firm up and improve my condition and health.I highly recommend the Atkins diet. It is simply the best and most successful fat loss program of all time.Dr Atkins, RIP. Was this review helpful to you? Acosta "Manya" (Chicago, Il) - See all my reviews I read Atkin's and right then, it made me go back in time to my young years in my country, as well as to the life style of the "gauchos" (cowboys)... Because these people basic diet consist in lots of proteins (cow meat, lamb, pig, chicken, eggs and fish from fresh water) and of course healthy carbs (vegetables and fruits usually from their own farms). They, in general, live long lasting lives... they do not use chemicals and do not know what junk food is... they hardly ever visit a hospital (I can say that as a fact because my mom was a nurse in the main hospital) and from what I heard from her, they would go to a hospital usually because of accidents at work... not because of lack in health caused by their diets... In addition to that, because of their hard work, they are usually thin (they don't even need to exercise). I, myself, followed this diet (bad to say not for so long because I wasn't very persistant) and besides the awful headaches I had the first two or three days during the change in habits, I have to recognize that the diet was great, I lost about 8 lbs in two weeks!!! Amazing!!! And I can't beleive how, some people in these reviews who claim are doctors can tell that the diet says you have to eat fats... as if was something totally free...! I think we are smart people, and what Atkins message express is: GO BACK TO NATURAL HEALTHY HABITS!!! He also talks about exercising... And of course, he doesn't say fill yourself with fats... I think that, who maintain that point of view are misleading people from the real message! And as a last word, somebody else in these reviews said, keeping a healthy diet and exercising will keep you fit, this is another fad diet!!! Please, you can give that message to somebody who never gain 100 extra pounds!!! Because like you said it will keep you fit, but it won't make you lose weight!!! You have to be overweight to understand what that person goes through!!! Was this review helpful to you? I started Atkins the end of March 2004. Excercise alone wasn't cutting it for me. I'd been working out for over a month and had lost hardly anything. Atkins was popular at the time, and thought I'd give it a try. I have never eaten so many vegetables in my life, and actually like them now! To the reviewer who said Atkins had heart problems, that's a bold face lie propagated by the PCRM, a vegan animal rights group affiliated with PETA. They don't like ANY diet that allows meat. Simple as that. They are as biased as a group can get. The truth is that Atkins had a heart infection caused by a virus he picked up on an oveseas trip. As for his being overweight at the time of his death, here's what *really* happened - he slipped on the sidewalk, hit his head, and the hospital pumped him full of steroids to try to reduce the swelling. Steroids cause MASSIVE water retention. So he was overweight, but it was all water. So to that reviewer: get your facts straight before you post. Ok, what Atkins did for me: 1) My adult acne cleared up. I now have clear skin. 2) I've lost 55 pounds (so far - still have a ways to go). 3) My cholesterol is 166. 4) My bad cholesterol went down 14 points, and my good cholesterol went up 29 points! :) 5) My heart attack risk went from a good 3.4 down to an EXCELLENT 2.2. (Anything under 3.5 is considered "low risk," the lower the better.) 6) I've gone from a size 18 to a size 10. 7) My body fat went from 37.8% to 26%. That's a reduction in body fat of 11.8%. 8) My blood pressure went from high normal to low normal. It's currently about 100/62. 9) My triglicerides (a measure of how much fat is in your blood) are a rock bottom 39 (they need to be under 150, the lower the better). 10) I was so addicted to sugar that fruit didn't taste sweet. Now it is sweet. I've been eating tons of summer berries (YUM!), and I can't remember the last time I had a Snickers bar. I don't even miss them. I cannot thank Dr. Atkins enough for turning my life around, changing my eating habits, and getting my horrible medication-induced carb cravings under control. I love this way of eating, and with my blood tests coming back so great, I'm sticking with it! Thanks, Dr. A! Was this review helpful to you? His diet is a classic but it's very easy for people to abuse by staying on it for an extended length of time. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine does not recommend this diet. I think the South Beach diet, written by a cardiologist, is much safer. Was this review helpful to you? I (female) started in Jan 2003 at age 32, 5'11", 254 lbs with a laundry list of ailments (Acid reflux, painful heels & back, headaches, high blood pressure and was pre-diabetic). In my first 6 months all of my aches and pains disappeared and in my first year I lost 71 lbs. Right now I've lost a total of 104 lbs and have NEVER felt better! I'm 16 lbs under my goal weight and maintaining this lifestyle is second nature now. I get all of my carbs from healthy vegetables, fruits, and nuts. Dr. Atkins literally saved my life and I just wish he was around to thank in person! I owe everything to the good Dr. A! Was this review helpful to you? (Report this) See all 1291 customer reviews...
